11) 古城会館

2005 - Karol Kwan (Guan) received S$250 award and
study aid from the Association.
As mentioned briefly in the home-page how ChongHui (Cantonese=SungWai) benefited from the aid and support of this clan association. This chapter serves to give credit to the purpose and mission of this clan and for the direct descendants of SungWai to give back to the society.

Gucheng (古城会馆) reminds its members the friendship, loyalty, bravery and brotherhood shown by the four sworn-brothers (刘备, 关羽, 张飞, 赵云) during the "Three Kingdoms" period from AD210 to 270.

Poorly translated to English :
"LiuKwanChangZhao-Clan Association" originally named "4-surname clan" established in 1873, as a clan whose members must bear the Chinese surnames of either "刘关张赵" (regardless of the English variations). It was first located at Telok Ayer Street (need verification) . In 1924 it was renamed to " Gucheng Clan" and later changed again to Gucheng Association" and the most recent change in 1946 to " Liu Kwan Chang Zhao Gucheng Association" . In 1993 it was relocated to Geylang Lor 24A with 160 members ."

Numerous books, movies and even games were made about the heroic acts of
the 4-sworn brothers.

Why Name as Gucheng (古城)
The Legend:

Legend has it that Gucheng (古城 means “Ancient City” in Chinese) was a place in Henan 河南, where the three warlords (刘,关,张) met after Guan Yu’s (关羽) famous “Cross Five Passes Slaying Six Generals” (过五关斩六将) in 公元AD200. When Guan Yu re-united with the two others at Gucheng (古城).

Later, in the Battle of the Red Cliff (赤壁), in Hubei, along the Yangtze River, the three warlords, united with Zhao Yun (赵云), before the final attack on Cao Cao.

Battle of the Red Cliff (赤壁) was fought together with Liu Qi (刘琦)/Sun Quan (孙权) alliance against Cao Cao (曹操) in 公元AD208. (Click here for a 4 page history lesson on the Battle of Red Cliff ) .
